Puppies aren’t just for Christmas. Come the new year, they are still there, in need of love, care, food, and an unbelievable amount of belly rubs. And these new arrivals don’t come with an easy new puppy guide or manual.
Sometimes the responsibilities of owning a puppy can come as a bit of a shock to the system. Especially as these tiny tots need pretty constant attention and protection. But never fear, PittaPatta is here!
We know that with this Christmas season, Santa may be sending a few fur babies down the chimney. And so we have put together a handy little puppy survival guide for any new puppy owner who may feel a little out of their depth.
So, without further ado, we introduce to you: PittaPatta’s puppy guide for new owners.
New puppies require a lot of gear! With everything from toys and treats, all the way to training pages, harnesses and leads, blankets and beds, the cost can really rack up.
We would recommend looking into purchasing high-quality products that are more likely to last longer and withstand puppy chews, nibbles and little accidents.
Bringing your puppy home and introducing them to a new space can be a beautiful but intense experience.
A new environment comes with a lot of stimulation for tiny puppy noses, and so it is important to allow your puppy to fully explore and get to grips with their new home.
It can take some adjustment for your new fur baby, but as long as you give them time and offer them lots of reassurance and security, they will make themselves at home in no time.
(If you’d like to read more about how to make this a smooth transition, check out our blog on Introducing Your New Dog to the Family (+ Your Other Dogs) here.)
Puppies haven’t yet developed strong immune systems and resistance to bugs and illnesses. And so making sure they are fully inoculated before being allowed to leave the house is a top priority.
(The RSPCA has a handy list of what vaccinations your dog will need here.)
Training is more effective when begun in a dog’s formative years. Which is why it’s best to adopt a training regime and stick to it, as this will give you the best chance of developing a well-behaved and loving pooch.
(We’ve even written a blog on this topic. Read more about What to Train - Dog Training For First Time Owners here.)
Each puppy is completely unique and so will present with different behaviours and demeanours, particularly influenced by their breed.
Make sure you are brushed up on puppy etiquette to ensure you are well equipped to manage and recognise various behaviours in your little one.
